Hi, I’m Erica Maleski, Associate Dean at the Learning Center at Northcentral Technical College. Welcome to NTC’s career pathways initiative. Where we train adults just like you for well paid careers in IT. As you prepare to enter the IT program it’s important that you have a strong computer vocabulary as well as to be able to navigate various programs and applications. If this is an area you want to strengthen you might want to work in the NTC Learning Center where you can build those skills and gain confidence through the support of our instructors. You may also find it helpful to improve your problem solving and critical thinking skills. These are critical elements to a successful career in IT. Working with a Peer mentor or strengthening your math and algebra skills in the Learning Center can make a big difference. Asking for help as a college student is actually a skill. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people. There are a lot of resources on campus who want to help you progress through your program and help you gain confidence. We really want to see you be successful in an exciting new career. The web and digital media program focuses on learning to create modify maintain enhance and develop websites. Students take course in website development, design and graphics. Positions for students taking this program include Web Master, Web Designer, Website Developer, and Web Support Specialist. Those students who succeed they are comfortable working with file management features in an operating system. They are comfortable using the internet. And they have a basic understanding of application software. Certificates that would be appropriate for somebody considering the web and digital media development program would include. The IT Webmaster Basics Certificate for 17 credits. And then the IT Webmaster Advanced Certificate for 18 credits. I earned the Web and Digital Media Development Associates Degree at NTC. I originally started out pursuing a WebDav certificate. I think the most vivid way to think about it. You take a website and peel back the cover and see a bit of the coding and what’s involved behind the scenes. Adding this digital training I think could work very well in a lot of different fields. Because so many different fields have websites that relate to maybe banking or health care or really a number of businesses. It certainly positioned me with the skills to understand what’s required and to work with those professionals that have that more detailed and in depth training . The computer support specialist program is different from the other IT programs at NTC in that you get to learn a little bit about everything; programming, networking, software, website support and design. Computer support specialists may find themselves supporting one or more of these areas in a given job. Some of the potential jobs in Computer Support Specialist, Computer Applications specialist, PC technician, Help Desk technician, Software Trainer. You’ll learn more about Windows, office software, networking, web sites, help desk skills and service skills. To prepare yourself for the CSS program, you should take some classes to become comfortable with the windows operating system including file management. Also practice your typing skills. You’ll spend a lot of time at the keyboard. Beginning with a certificate is a good way to test your interest in this field for only a small commitment. You may want to start with the Microsoft Office Certificate and the A+/Computer Hardware certificate. My name is Brandon Jenson I’m a technical services team lead. And I work at Green Heck Fan Corporation. I oversee our help desk and desktop operations group they handle the first line of support for our business. I also do some of our project management on the backend side dealing with Microsoft exchange active directory Microsoft link those types of products. The Computer support specialist program is more centered around troubleshooting computers whether its hardware software NTC really tries to prepare you so that when you do go out into a real world job that you can troubleshoot this problems effectively/ Certifications they are all very good when you want to learn a fundamental skill. A+ certification is an industry wide certification. Microsoft Office is a tool that many businesses center around. There is network + certification security + certification. It helps employers when they want to hire somebody that maybe doesn’t have a lot of experience in the industry they can see those certifications and know they have fundamental knowledge around the product. With a network specialist associate degree you will be able to install and maintain locate area networks as well as wide area networks. To support these networks you will be trained in the use of wireless technologies, voice-over-IP, network routers, standard network troubleshooting procedures and web server management. You will also learn how to install and administer operating systems such as Windows Server and Linux. This program will also prepare you to test for well-respected and widely known certificates such as Cisco Certified Network Administrator. Which is often refered to as (CCNA), Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), CompTia Security + and CompTia Network +. After you graduate your likely job opportunities will be: Linux/Unix administrator, Network Administrator, support specialist , Windows Administrator, Network Manager, and Cisco Administrator. I was laid off in July of 2008 and I could not find a job. I came back to school to get the degree I didn’t have but also to change careers. I’m a student in the IT networking and programing classes. My job in the ISIT department is Work Study and I’m first or second level IT support. So basically going to classrooms and fixing computers or bringing them back here and doing a more in depth look at them as needed. Programming is a very dynamic career. You always get to work with emerging technologies. The programming field has endless growth opportunities. For example in robotics, android, iphone and research areas. In today’s business world you communicate through the keyboard so improving your typing skills is essential. The program requires a high level of problem solving processes. It is critical that programmers continuously improve their grammar and professional writing skills. There are many advantages starting with a certificate in the IT area. The Database Developer Certificate prepares the student to design and maintain databases. It focuses on Data Normalization, SQL Statements and Data Based Schemas & Designs. The Visual .NET Developer Certificate would prepare the student to write Microsoft Windows Network Applications for Businesses. My name is Sherry Oakes and I work at Greenheck Fan and my position is assistant coordinator. Some of the things that I do in my job are working on the computer aided product solution that the reps use to order our products. We set the constraints and pretty much allow and disallow certain items within that product. What attracted me to the IT field is the diversity. The fact that you can use so many different programs, do so many different things. I like that every day is different the days go by so fast because there is so much to do. I decided to go back to school because I was in a position where I was working with the computer aided product selection and being introduced to it in that position I realized how much I really enjoyed it and I wanted to go a little further with it and be able to do more than I was able to do at the time. If you already have a job if you already want to refresh on something or get better with something then I think that the certificates are definitely helpful. IT Positions are in high demand. Positions that we typically look for are those individuals that support the business. Helpdesk positions networking positions as well as programmers analysts who are going to implement new technologies within our business. We’re looking for individuals who have excellent customer service skills excellent communication skills ability to be a team player and also the ability to have a continuous improvement mindset and are able to understand a business process from start to finish and identify where improvements could be made in that business process. We have a great relationship with NTC and we do look to them as a partner in helping to fill many of our positions such as help desk positions and programmer positions. Certificates are definitely going to differentiate between one candidate over another especially if they don’t have a lot of work experience. So we do look for more the industry standards certificates like Microsoft Office and then in the networking area the Cisco certifications. Thanks for watching, you can find more information on our website.
Be creative: The best ad
Be motivated: The three races
In old times, fable retells the story of the young athletic boy hungry for success, for whom winning was everything and success was measured by such a result.
One day, the boy was preparing himself for a running competition in his small native village, himself and two other young boys to compete. A large crowd had congregated to witness the sporting spectacle and a wise old man, upon hearing of the little boy, had travelled far to bear witness also.
The race commenced, looking like a level heat at the finishing line, but sure enough the boy dug deep and called on his determination, strength and power. He took the winning line and was first. The crowd was ecstatic and cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man remained still and calm, expressing no sentiment. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.
A second race was called, and two new young, fit, challengers came forward, to run with the little boy. The race was started and sure enough the little boy came through and finished first once again. The crowd was ecstatic again and cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man remained still and calm, again expressing no sentiment. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.
"Another race, another race!" pleaded the little boy. The wise old man stepped forward and presented the little boy with two new challengers, an elderly frail lady and a blind man. "What is this?", quizzed the little boy. "This is no race" he exclaimed. "Race!", said the wise man. The race was started and the boy was the only finisher, the other two challengers left standing at the starting line. The little boy was ecstatic, he raised his arms in delight. The crowd, however, was silent showing no sentiment toward the little boy.
"What has happened? Why not do the people join in my success?" he asked the wise old man. "Race again", replied the wise man, "This time, finish together, all three of you, finish together" continued the wise man. The little boy thought a little, stood in the middle of the blind man and the frail old lady, and then took the two challengers by the hand. The race began and the little boy walked slowly, ever so slowly, to the finishing line and crossed it. The crowd were ecstatic and cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man smiled, gently nodding his head. The little boy felt proud and important.
"Old man, I understand not! Who are the crowd cheering for? Which one of us three?", asked the little boy. The wise old man looked into the little boy's eyes, placing his hands on the boy's shoulders, and replied softly: "Little boy, for this race you have won much more than in any race you have ever ran before, and for this race the crowd cheer not for any winner!"
