Social networking sites
Hello. My name is Angelina. I’m a teacher with the online English school, EnglishDom.com. Today we’re going to learn about social networking websites.
A social networking website is a site where a person can post their online profile which might include photos, videos, blog entries, links to other websites that they are interested in, lists of their activities and their hobbies. There are many different types of social networking websites such as MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus and LinkedIn. The most popular social networking site is Facebook with over 640 million users worldwide. It seems as though everyone is using Facebook from young children to grandparents – some people have even made a Facebook page for their pets! There are advantages and disadvantages to being an online user like that. Some advantages are being able to communicate with a large group of people very quickly. You are able to organize events and spread information very fast and bring people together to do something good. Some disadvantages to using online sites like this are sometimes you are sharing too much information, sometimes people tend to forget that the words they write and the photos they post online will be able to be seen by everyone for a long, long time. Those things are able to be viewed, printed, shared and saved. Sometimes people post negative things online about their employers and sometimes this can get your fired to do this. The same goes for relationships – sometimes a person might post a photo of them with another person that they should not be with. Facebook can be a great thing, and really any social networking site can be a great thing, you just have to be careful about what information you share and who you share that information with.
Some idioms and expressions about social networking sites are "Facebook me", "Friend me", "StalkerSpace". When a person says "Facebook me" what they mean is send a message through Facebook, not email or instant message or anything like that. They want you to send them a message through the Facebook website. The next one is, "Friend me", this also has to do with Facebook and MySpace and that’s when you send an online request to a person and ask them to add them as a friend on Facebook. The last one is "StalkerSpace" and this is kind of making fun of MySpace. Sometimes people use social networking sites to find a lot of information about people who don’t realize they are being "stalked" in a way.

There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer.
When asked to define "Great" he said,
"I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!"
He now works for Microsoft, writing error messages.
